Texas Property Taxes – Other

Besides the city, county, and school property taxes, some other property taxes may apply to specific properties in Texas. These include:

  • Special district taxes: Some properties are located within the boundaries of special districts, such as water districts, hospital districts, community college districts, or emergency services districts. These districts can levy additional property taxes to fund their operations and services.
  •  Municipal utility district (MUD) taxes: Some properties are served by municipal utility districts, which are local governmental entities that provide water, sewer, drainage, and other services to residents. MUDs can impose property taxes to pay for their infrastructure and maintenance costs.
  •  Tax increment reinvestment zone (TIRZ) taxes: Some properties are located within tax increment reinvestment zones. In these designated areas, a portion of the property tax revenue is used to finance public improvements and economic development projects. TIRZs can increase the property tax rate for properties within the zone to fund these projects.

Texas Property Taxes – Exemptions

Property tax exemptions are reductions in the taxable value of a property that can lower the amount of property tax owed by the owner. Texas offers several types of property tax exemptions, such as:

  • Residence homestead exemption: This exemption applies to the owner’s primary residence and can remove $40,000 of taxable value for school district taxes and $3,000 for county taxes. Additionally, owners aged 65 or older or disabled can get an extra $10,000 exemption for school district taxes and a tax ceiling that limits the amount of taxes they have to pay.
  •  Disabled veterans exemption: This exemption applies to veterans with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10% and can range from $5,000 to $12,000 depending on the degree of disability. Veterans who are 100% disabled or unemployable can get a total exemption from all property taxes on their residence homestead.
  •  Charitable organizations and businesses exemption: This exemption applies to certain types of properties used for religious, educational, charitable, or other public purposes and can be partial or total depending on the criteria set by the state or local taxing units.
  •  Solar and wind-powered energy device exemption: This exemption applies to properties that have installed solar or wind-powered energy devices for on-site use and can exclude the added value of the devices from taxation.

The amount and rate of these other property taxes depend on the location and type of the property, as well as the budget and policies of each taxing unit. You can find more information about these other Texas property taxes on the Texas Comptroller’s website or your local appraisal district’s website.
